Near-total coverage, including the tunnels and the bullet train
No roaming agreement covers Japan, so it is full rate for every European visitor.
The coverage itself is about as good as it gets anywhere. Cities are saturated, the Shinkansen holds a signal at three hundred kilometres an hour, and the subway is covered throughout — including the tunnels, which is unusual and deliberate. Even the mountain lines into Hakone and the Japan Alps stay connected far longer than their European equivalents would.
Where it thins is genuinely remote: the interior of Hokkaido, parts of the Kii peninsula, and the smaller islands of Okinawa away from the resorts.
One practical note — Japan runs on translation and transit apps more than almost any destination, and both want a live connection all day. Budget more data here than for a European city break of the same length.

Japan eSIM: questions
When does the plan start counting?
From the first connection to a network in Japan, not from the moment you buy it. Install at home, activate after you land.
Do I get a phone number in Japan?
No. Plans here are data only: use messaging and calling apps over data.
Can I use it as a hotspot?
Yes. Hotspot is included, so a laptop or a second phone can share the data.
What if I run out of data?
Top up the same eSIM with another data plan, or buy a new Unlimited plan for more days.
