Networks in Mexico
Strong in the cities and along the coasts, patchy in the mountains between them
No roaming agreement covers Mexico, so a European plan is full rate here.
Coverage is good in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey and across the Yucatán tourist corridor from Cancún to Tulum, where it is essentially continuous. The Pacific resorts and the Baja highway are well served too.
Between them the country is mountainous and the coverage shows it. The Sierra Madre, the Copper Canyon and the roads through Chiapas and Oaxaca have service in the towns and long gaps in between — the Copper Canyon railway in particular runs for hours without a signal.
For the Yucatán specifically, the cenotes and the inland archaeological sites are often out of range even when the nearest resort is twenty minutes away, because the coverage follows the coast and not the interior.
Mexico eSIM: questions
When does the plan start counting?
From the first connection to a network in Mexico, not from the moment you buy it. Install at home, activate after you land.
Do I get a phone number in Mexico?
No. Plans here are data only: use messaging and calling apps over data.
Can I use it as a hotspot?
Yes. Hotspot is included, so a laptop or a second phone can share the data.
What if I run out of data?
Top up the same eSIM with another data plan, any time.
